Northampton-based alternative rock band Distilled are gearing up to release a brand spanking new single (Out on iTunes & Spotify Monday 13th October). And what a tune it is! More than worthy winners of a local Battle of the Bands competition a while back and more recently only narrowly missing out winning a nationwide competition that would have included a record deal demonstrates the swathes of talent wrapped up tight within this awesome 4-piece. Needless to say after completely devouring the previous selection of superb songs they have put out I have been waiting for something new with avid excitement. Not unlike a kid who knows he’s getting to ride in the Doctor’s TARDIS for an adventure in time and space. The guys certainly don’t dissapoint with this single, Stand!
Whereas the strong influence of the best of the likes of Arctic Monkeys is instantly noticeable on tracks like CIA and If It Didn’t Mean Anything (in no way a bad thing) there is a noticeably different sound to Stand. Perhaps hinted at previously with the calmer b-side Sleeping Pattern and the even gentler acoustic single Smoke, Stand goes well beyond both, perfectly marrying up the originality Distilled have to offer. The opening guitar has a hook that could catch the most elusive of fish. It goes on to not only underpin the entire track – pulling it together nicely – but the vocals alongside it make you feel like they are an inseperable pair of ingredients creating an exceptionally tasty treat. They work in such a wonderful sync. It won’t take many listens before this fits snuggly on your good earworm playlist, trust me.
In sum, this new song delivers a well-rounded level of subtlety without losing the vibrant energy of the faster-paced rockfests. Even during the calmer moments the colossal energy can be felt brimming just under the surface before it is let loose in a tremendous tuneful tirade. For me, the difference to previous songs marks the growth of this young band and it leads me full circle back to a fervent excitemet for what will follow it.
